Fernando is a PhD candidate in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences and a member of its Visual Perception research group. He studies spatial perception: how the brain computes the separation between objects in space, using visual illusions as experimental tools.

He founded the Vision Sciences Association at Iowa in 2026.
